Particle image velocimetry video of suction feeding

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a whole-flow-field technique providing instantaneous velocity vector measurements in a cross-section of a flow. This technique being a non-intrusive one, allows the application of PIV in high speed flows, boundary layer studies of fluids.

High-speed video (500 frames/sec) of a bluegill sunfish feeding in a laser light field. Tracer particles are suspended in the water column to enable calculation of flow velocities throughout the flow field generated by the fish. Film by Steven Day and Tim Higham. All live animal protocols were approved by the University of California’s Animal Care and Use Committee.
