Copy of Dantec towing tank PIV system delivered to MARIN

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a whole-flow-field technique providing instantaneous velocity vector measurements in a cross-section of a flow. This technique being a non-intrusive one, allows the application of PIV in high speed flows, boundary layer studies of fluids.

Dantec Dynamics have sold and implemented several PIV systems for underwater applications. Recently, a stereoscopic PIV system and traversing mechanism have been successfully installed in a towing tank at MARIN in Waageningen, the Netherlands.

The system is optimized for easy mounting and dismounting, fast calibration and efficient use of the towing tank time.

The stereoscopic towing tank PIV system delivered to MARIN.

Compact, modular optics
The PIV system comprises a DualPower Nd:YAG laser (1), connected to a streamlined submerged probe containing light sheet optics (2) and two camera modules (3) containing 4 Megapixel FlowSense cameras with remote controlled Scheimpflug mount, focus and aperture settings. The measurement area is seen via mirror modules (4). The light sheet optics, camera and mirror modules can be arranged in asymmetrical or symmetrical configurations depending on the application.

Efficient and user-friendly software
Image acquisition and storage is distributed on two PCs running the DynamicStudio software package. Postprocessing of the huge amounts of acquired data, can be speeded up by distributing it to a complete PC network.
The PIV probe and laser is mounted on a two-axis traversing mechanism controlled by the DynamicStudio software.

Fast mounting, alignment and calibration
Commisioning tests included vibration measurements on the strut and confirm a high rigidity of the system in spite of its low weight. Fast mounting, alignment and calibration of the system is vital to MARIN as the system will be moved between three tanks at the facility.
The users’ experience after a few months confirm that the system can be aligned and calibrated in less than 2 hours.
The first results from measurements around a thruster look very promising.

MARIN's first results from a thruster test measured with the new PIV system.

The supplied state-of-the art towing tank PIV system has moved PIV from the lab to real “industrial” applications where ease-of-use and minimised time consumption is essential.
